CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger have confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is in production, exciting fans of the critically acclaimed anime set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. The announcement was made during a livestreamed panel, “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – Behind the Scenes With its Creators,” at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles on July 4, 2025.
The panel featured writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor, director Hiroyuki Imaishi, voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez), and host Joey “The Anime Man” Bizinger.
The new season will be a standalone 10-episode story set in Night City, described as a “raw chronicle of redemption and revenge.” Unlike the first season, it will introduce fresh characters and a new narrative, leaving behind the story of David Martinez and Lucy. Sztybor emphasized the shift, saying, “David’s story might be over, but there’s plenty more to discover in Night City.”
He also teased a darker, sadder, and bloodier tone, jokingly adding that he wants to make viewers “even more sad” than the first season’s emotional ending.
Kai Ikarashi, who directed episode six (“Girl on Fire”) of the original series, will take the helm as director for his debut, with Hiroyuki Imaishi passing the torch. Returning collaborators include lead character designer Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) and scriptwriter Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare). Studio Trigger’s signature vibrant animation style will bring the new story to life on Netflix, though a release date remains unconfirmed, with estimates suggesting 2026 or 2027 due to animation production timelines.
The announcement included a reveal of the official logo and poster art by Ichigo Kanno, showcased during the panel. A teaser trailer was also presented at a closed-door Studio Trigger panel later that evening. Fans can expect more details via the official Cyberpunk: Edgerunners website, newsletter, or social media channels like X, Facebook, and Instagram.
This sequel follows the success of the 2022 series, which earned a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and boosted Cyberpunk 2077’s popularity. The new season aims to expand Night City’s dystopian world, exploring themes of violence and survival. Fans on X are buzzing with excitement, though some express hope for cameos from characters like Adam Smasher, while others brace for the emotional intensity promised by Sztybor.
