Reburn, the independent game development studio formerly known as 4A Games Ukraine, has announced that its highly anticipated sci-fi cooperative shooter, La Quimera, will launch on PC via Steam on April 25, 2025. Priced at $29.99, this narrative-driven first-person shooter promises to deliver an immersive experience that blends intense gunplay, a gripping storyline, and cutting-edge technology, all set in a dystopian Latin American landscape.
The release date was revealed alongside a new gameplay trailer, which showcases the game’s exosuit-enhanced combat and cooperative mechanics. Additionally, a closed beta is scheduled to provide players with an early taste of the action this week.
A New Chapter for Reburn
La Quimera marks the debut of an original intellectual property (IP) from Reburn, a studio comprised of over 110 developers with credits on the acclaimed Metro series, including Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus, as well as the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Led by CEO and co-founder Dmytro Lymar, who previously served as director and CEO of 4A Games Ukraine, and project lead Oleksandr Kostiuk, a veteran gameplay and AI designer from the Metro trilogy, Reburn brings its signature expertise in crafting atmospheric, story-rich shooters to this ambitious project.
The studio’s transition from 4A Games Ukraine to Reburn reflects its desire to explore new creative horizons while retaining the tense, immersive gameplay that defined its past work.
“Our Reburn team can’t wait to finally share our hard work and vision for La Quimera with players on April 25,” said Lymar in a press statement. “As a development studio operating out of Ukraine, the last several years have been extremely challenging in terms of bringing any artistic creation to life while contending with the realities of war and dramatic shifts in the games industry. Through it all, we stayed focused on what we love: creating immersive, story-driven experiences.”
Setting and Story
Set in the year 2064, La Quimera transports players to a fractured, dystopian Latin America where the collapse of global systems in the 2030s and 2040s has left humanity fragmented into microstates. In this chaotic new world, private military companies (PMCs) reign supreme, thriving in what the developers call the “golden age” of mercenary forces.
Players assume the role of a down-on-their-luck PMC operative navigating the sprawling megalopolis of Nuevo Caracas and its surrounding lush jungles, caught in a web of rival factions, shadowy corporations, and mystical phenomena that blur the lines between reality and illusion.
The game’s narrative, co-written by acclaimed filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon) and E.J.A. Warren, weaves Latin American folklore with futuristic sci-fi elements, promising a story that’s as enigmatic as it is action-packed. From battling robotic enemies to unraveling a conspiracy steeped in deception, La Quimera aims to deliver a cinematic experience with emotional depth.
Gameplay and Features
La Quimera is built on the 4A Engine, the same technology that powered the Metro series, ensuring high-fidelity visuals and smooth performance. The game offers both solo and cooperative play, supporting up to three players in its online co-op mode. Here are its key features:
- Customizable Exosuits: Players can equip and modify exosuits with advanced gadgetry and superhuman strength, enabling abilities like multi-target electric shocks, agile evasions, and enhanced combat prowess.
- Diverse Arsenal: Choose from a variety of futuristic weapons, including assault rifles, shotguns, SMGs, and handguns, each customizable to suit different playstyles and enemy types.
- Hostile Factions and Robotic Foes: Face off against unique enemies, from lightly armed bandits and stealthy sharpshooters to heavily armored elite fighters and robotic adversaries that fly, crawl on ceilings, and scale walls, requiring creative tactics to defeat.
- Cooperative Exploration: Team up with friends to coordinate tactics, share resources, and tackle missions together, enhancing the atmospheric shooter experience.
- AI Companion: A personal combat AI assistant provides tactical guidance during intense encounters and serves as a narrative guide in quieter moments.
The latest gameplay trailer highlights these elements, showcasing sleek urban environments, dense jungle settings, and fast-paced combat that evokes comparisons to classics like Crysis and Killzone. The trailer also emphasizes the game’s polish, a testament to Reburn’s experience despite its modest team size and the challenges of developing amidst Ukraine’s ongoing conflict.
Closed Beta and Launch Details
Ahead of its full release, Reburn is hosting a 24-hour closed beta on April 12, 2025, starting at 7:00 AM PT (10:00 AM ET). This limited-access test will allow players to experience a pivotal mid-game mission in either solo or co-op mode. Fans can request access via the game’s Steam page, though spots are limited, and participation is not guaranteed. The beta aims to give players an early look at the cooperative dynamics and the richly detailed world of Nuevo Caracas.
La Quimera will launch exclusively on PC via Steam, with no word yet on potential console releases for PlayStation or Xbox. Pre-orders have not been detailed, but the game’s $29.99 price point has raised eyebrows for its affordability, given its AAA-level presentation. Some speculate this could indicate a shorter campaign, though Reburn has not confirmed the game’s length.
Since its initial reveal in February 2025, La Quimera has generated buzz for its unique setting and pedigree. The shift from the dark, subterranean tunnels of Metro to the vibrant, sunlit chaos of a futuristic Latin America reflects Reburn’s intent to evolve while staying true to its roots. With Refn’s involvement adding a layer of cinematic intrigue, the game has drawn attention from both FPS enthusiasts and fans of narrative-driven experiences.
