If you’re a fan of the classic shooter series, then it’s worth checking out Doom 64, which is now available with PlayStation Plus Premium. This remaster of the game, which was released for Nintendo 64 in 1997, brings the iconic title to Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One with improved graphics and updated gameplay.

Doom is a first-person shooter franchise that’s known for its fast-paced, white-knuckle demon-slaying action. The series’ latest entry, Doom Eternal, is also available to Extra-tier subscribers on PS Plus this month.

Aside from Doom Eternal, other titles for the Extra tier for April include Wolfenstein: The Old Blood and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, as well as multiplayer sports games Riders Republic and Bassmaster Fishing. There’s also deckbuilder Slay the Spire, adventure games Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, Paradise Killer and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

The remastered version of Doom 64 is developed by Nightdive Studios, who’ve been responsible for some of the best remasters in recent memory, including Turok and Turok 2. They’ve done an excellent job at restoring this game to its former glory, even adding new graphics and gameplay elements as a result.

In addition to bringing Doom 64 to modern consoles, Nightdive has also added two bonus fun maps to the game: the Title Map and Test Facility. The latter is a level that allows the player to test weapons and other elements without entering the main gameplay area.

Despite some minor flaws, this remaster of Doom 64 is an excellent way to relive the classic shooter series’ original 32-level campaign, which is full of secrets and power-ups. It’s as frantic and responsive as any classic Doom game should be, with all the id Software trademarks intact.
