Mortal Kombat 1 has introduced its first post-launch character, Omni-Man, known from the Robert Kirkman comic book “Invincible.” NetherRealm Studios unveiled the gameplay trailer during the New York Comic Con 2023 event, showcasing Omni-Man’s brutal moves, inspired by the animated series adaptation available on Amazon Prime Video. This villainous character will become a standalone fighter in November, accessible to players who have purchased the Premium Edition of the game or the Kombat Pack DLC separately. Actor J.K. Simmons will reprise his role, lending his voice to Omni-Man in Mortal Kombat 1.
In a departure from the typical Mortal Kombat crossover style, NetherRealm Studios has used multiversal elements to explain the inclusion of new comic book characters in the DLC. Omni-Man appears to have entered a new timeline created by the Fire God Liu Kang, leading to an intense showdown between the two characters in the gameplay trailer.
Despite Omni-Man’s arrogant demeanor and seemingly slow movements, he demonstrates incredible strength, effortlessly tossing his opponents around with one hand and delivering a brutal Fatality move, which results in a bloodbath as he pins them down and repeatedly punches their faces before smashing their skulls open. The trailer also features a gruesome moment where Omni-Man squeezes Liu Kang’s head until his eyeballs pop out.
The trailer reveals Omni-Man’s plans to establish the Viltrum Empire, his home planet. He even uses his opponent, Scorpion, as a human shield against an oncoming subway train, with the train’s iron bars and torn metal inflicting further damage. This portrayal stays true to the violent nature of the character from the original series.
Additionally, the Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay trailer introduces Tremor, a ninja with Earth elemental powers, who serves as a Kameo (assist) fighter for Omni-Man. Tremor can be seen transforming his arms into powerful boulders to smash enemies or emerging from beneath the Earth’s surface to catch opponents off guard.
Omni-Man is part of Mortal Kombat 1’s DLC add-on pack, which promises to introduce several other fighters. Following the introduction of Omni-Man and Tremor in November, NetherRealm has confirmed that Quan Chi, a necromancy expert, and DC Comics’ Peacemaker will join the roster in Winter 2023/2024.
In Spring 2024, players can expect the telekinetic Ermac and the villainous Homelander from “The Boys,” as well as Scorpion’s student, Takeda Takahashi, in the American Summer of 2024. While some new Kameo fighters are also expected, there is no release window provided for them yet.
Mortal Kombat 1 is out now on PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch.
